UPF National Character Education

The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) is embarked on a program to train teachers in peace and character education for implementation in Nigerian schools. We aim at training a total of 4,560 teachers nationwide. Teachers who attend this training learn the meaning of character education and come to appreciate its importance for the development of young people’s relationships in their families, in their workplaces, and in their communities. Character education helps young people avoid careless and destructive behavior, violence, substance abuse, promiscuity, crime, etc.
This education is addressing the degradation of character and moral values that has become endemic in our times. The program outcome will be the availability of an ample pool of educators and resource persons that will bring awareness about the urgently required moral value and character development among youths in Nigeria.

Although the focus of this program is on youths, it is so comprehensive as to cater to all sections of society. As Africa emerges into the global stage, it must do so on a moral high ground with the aim of achieving the highest standard of civilization. It is with such resolve that we embarked on the program, starting at the most basic level.
Matters related to character development are a concern to governmental and non-governmental bodies, i.e., the public and private sectors as they are critically related to national development. In 2021, UPF established a national working committee to promote character education nationwide. The national working committee is comprised of sub-committees such as – Content Development and Review, Guidelines Development and Evaluation, Mobilization, Fundraising, etc.

A critical step in taking character education nationwide in Nigeria is the customization of the UPF Character Education materials. This has been the task of our Content Development and Review Sub-Committee. To date, we have completed a draft of the primary-level material. The curriculum material must be produced in book form for implementation of the program from the pilot stage and for advocacy at the nationwide stage. Ten thousand copies will be printed, to begin with.
With the customized curriculum material, we will begin training workshops for Character Education teachers in twenty pilot schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). By the resumption of schools in the new academic year, we shall embark on model presentations based on the new curriculum in the pilot schools. By the end of 2023, we shall conclude the pilot phase of the program with the launch of the twelve-day training of one-hundred-and-twenty-character education teachers for the FCT. And from the beginning of 2024, we shall proceed with the nationwide training programs. To do this there will be a need for a national survey to obtain empirical data on moral standards in the country and for an informed evaluation of the program in due course.

Peace is something that everyone desires. To have peace requires everyone’s investment. The National Peace and Character Education program in Nigeria requires continuous support both at the pilot stage and at the nationwide stage that will begin early next year. Support is required to conclude the pilot stage by the end of the year. Specific activities include:
• Curriculum review and adoption meetings • Teacher training workshops on the customized curriculum • Model demonstration presentations at pilot schools • Printing of ten thousand copies of the customized curriculum
Those who would like to participate in supporting this program should kindly contact UPF-UK Secretariat in London, or UPF-Nigeria Secretariat in Abuja. We thank you for your support. God bless you.
