Eulogy by Amira El Houderi: The Three Leadership Lessons I Learned From #TawfikBensaud

Honourable members of the Parliament, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, Today, I want to take this chance to remember a person who changed my perspective on leadership, in different ways. He was a very special person to many people who knew him. He was also able to inspire even those who never met him. I find it difficult to describe the essential truth about him as a person.

Gisela Stuart MPThis was a Youth UPF event hosted by the Rt Hon Baroness Verma, Parliamentary Under Secretary for Energy and Climate Change and featuring current political figures, Gisela Stuart MP and Rt Hon Tom Brake MP, Deputy Leader of the House of Commons.

Intro to UPF OctoberThe monthly meeting to introduce the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) was held last night in the UPF-UK HQ in London. It featured a number of UPF friends and Ambassadors for Peace discussing informal partnerships for campaigns or conferences in areas of common concern. Charlotte Simon, Founder of Mothers of Congo, spoke of her appreciation of UPF through working together to raise awareness of the suffering of the people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. While Robin Marsh spoke of the activities of UPF, Margaret Ali explained the peacemaking principles that guide and inspire those activities.

A 30-strong audience commemorated the UN International Day of Peace at a screening of the documentary film “Within the Eye of the Storm”, held at the Peace Embassy in Thornton Heath on 27 September. This exceptional film follows the parallel stories of Palestinian and Israeli fathers who both suffered the pain of bereavement when their daughters were killed in the conflict but who chose to set out on a journey together to humanize the enemy in order to prevent the vicious cycle of retaliation in themselves and their societies. The audience were visibly moved by the tremendous courage of these two men, who overcame the instinct for vengeance and instead sought understanding, reconciliation and justice with accountability. The film was introduced by Margaret Ali (Director of UPF-UK), who is a personal friend of the film director, Shelley Hermon. A sum of £140 was raised through donations collected at the event, and these funds will be used to promote the film in schools in Israel and Palestine.
