VENUE CHANGED: UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
Monday 18 November 2019, 04:00pm - 06:00pm

UPF and the Women’s Federation for World Peace UK are working together with partners in tackling Gender-based Violence in the Workplace.

United Nations theme for 2019 is focused on 'Ending Gender-Based Violence In The Workplace' which has been one of the most devastating human rights violations.

Employers hold a great responsibility in being able to effectively respond to domestic abuse in the workplace. According to statistics, 50% of women experience sexual harassment at work in the UK. 70% of those affected by domestic abuse are targeted in their workplace.

Gender-based violence is deeply rooted in gender inequality. It is a violence directed against a person because of their gender. Both women and men experience gender-based violence but the majority of victims are women and girls.

This heavily impacts the lives of these women and girls physically, mentally, sexually, and can lead to possible death. Due to the stigma that arises from this, it continues to be a serious ordeal for those involved. High numbers of unreported cases are side-lined due to the impunity, silence and shame. Sadly, families suffer greatly as a consequence.

In addition, according to some UN research, on data from 2005 to 2016 for 87 countries, 19 per cent of women between 15 and 49 years of age said they had experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner or family member in the 12 months prior to the survey.

We will have presentations on this topic from distinguished speakers, with experience in the field. Discussion topics will also include harassment of women at work and efforts, particularly in the UK, to stop bullying in the workplace!

We would want to imagine a world where neither women nor girls are abused, harassed or controlled. A world where equality and acceptance exists. In such a world a woman, no matter what her age, can participate in politics, receive an education, have her own income, dress and speak with no fear of discrimination or violence. The greatest achievements, accomplishments and movements all began with an idea. It was the dedication and free will of the individual and/or groups to spread their ideas that can bring them to fruition. They made it happen. So we can make it happen too.
