'Learning from the Covid-19 Experience How Can Parliamentarians Improve Global Governance to Prevent Similar Global Crises' was the full title of this event convened under the banner of International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), as association of the Universal Peace Federation - UK (UPF) on June 1st, 2020. Held on Zoom, this was attended by 127 people. Click on the links below to see the speeches.

Hon. Baroness Sandip Verma of Leicester

Hon. Afzal Khan MP CBE

Hon. Keith Best: Former MP and Chair of UK - UPF

Hon. Anthea McIntyre: Member of the European Parliament for the West Midlands (2011 to 2020)

Hon Faisal Karim Kundi: Former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan

Hon. Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri: Parliamentarian of Morocco, Former Chair of International Young Democrats Union

Keith Best explained, "In times of great international crisis when events transform the world in a way beyond the capacity of response by individual states or even groups of states global opinion has focused on how we can improve our international institutions and create new mechanisms for co-operation in the interests of humanity as a whole. This is not mere altruism but a practical desire to ensure our survival and prosperity in a spirit of partnership while still maintaining fruitful competition and a recognition that national advancement requires a degree of co-operation on trade, climate change and the environment, maintenance of peace and fundamental values. Parliamentarians have so often taken the lead and we must now harness that power in the current pandemic knowing that it will not be the last time that the global community is affected by overwhelming challenges. Our seminar further develops the work of IAPP and seeks ways forward."

Universal Peace Federation as a global NGO in General Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, promotes a world of interdependence, mutual prosperity centred on universal values. Acknowledging our interdependence, how can we prevent similar crises that threaten our mutual prosperity, from developing in future? We want to consider how we can emerge from this crisis with enhanced multi-lateral partnerships and more effective global governance structures, in line with these values?

This is an event under the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP) who are seeking to promote international dialogue among Parliamentarians. The IAPP has proposed a resolution for enhanced global preparedness for pandemics and other world crises that exceed the capacity of a nation, or blocks of nations, to respond. This will be released in the near future.

The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) has come a long way since 2005. The inaugural global tour by the co-founders, Father and Mother Moon, established a momentum that has continued through the years. Along the way UPF received a General Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations only shared by 140 other global NGOs. UPF – UK has received charitable status approximately one year ago.

This year is also Father Moon's centenary. There have been several major events such as the World Summit in February 2020 to highlight this centenary year and to further explain his vision for building an extensive culture of peace. Father Moon's inaugural UPF speeches were rooted in this vision of a world that recognises its interdependence, seeks to build mutual prosperity based on universal shared values aligned with God who loves us all equally, as one family of humanity. The website www.thelegacyoflove.org provides more information about the centenary anniversary.
